Description
Katafyki Cave is situated in Fires of Dryopida, spanning a total area of 3,500 square meters. There are two plateaus located at the entrance, the 'Small Plateau' and the 'Large Plateau'. This latter is where religious festivals were held after Easter. Further inside, one can find the 'Stalactite Hall' of 25x17 meters, featuring various colours and shapes, such as the 'Jellyfish', 'Octopus' and 'Teddy Bear'. The 'Tower of Babel' is a large stalagmite that stands out.
The rocks of the cave are composed of shale, marble and slate, while the main mineral extracted was hematite. The temperature is 17°C and the cave can be accessed through a circular path. Remnants of the cave's mining history, such as rails and wagons, can also be seen in certain places.
