Description
The Venetians took control of Crete in 1212 and remained in power until the mid-17th century.
The castle in Ierapetra was constructed by the Venetians in the 13th century to defend the port and the city. According to an unverifiable account, it may have been built by the Genoese pirate Enrico Pescatore in 1212 and then immediately sold to the Venetians.
In 1508, the castle suffered significant damage from a strong earthquake and was not fully restored. In 1626, Admiral Morozini conducted some repair work.
The Ottomans captured Ierapetra in 1647 and renovated the fort. They also constructed a larger castle in Ierapetra, as well as city walls, which were later demolished by the Greek population after Crete's liberation.
