It is a coastal village of the Rhodopes, which every summer has a lot of tourist traffic, thanks to the reputation of a wonderful, sandy beach with crystal clear waters. It is 32 kilometers from Komotini (you can reach it by road in about half an hour) and 38 kilometers from Xanthi - from Thessaloniki the distance is 235 kilometers. According to the 2011 census, 490 permanent residents live here.

Fanari is an ancient place, as Dikaia was once located on its territory. However, the current village was founded in the 1920s, after the annexation of Western Thrace to Greece, by refugees who came from Eastern Thrace and Asia Minor.
