Description

The village of Kanala, situated on the east side of Kythnos, is encompassed by a distinctive pine forest. Its beach, Megali Ammos, is a popular destination during the summer months, visited by tourists, islanders and locals alike. The church of Panagia Kanala boasts a miraculous image of Our Lady, discovered by fishermen.

The beach of Megali Ammos is renowned for its vast expanse of sand and its location in the gulf of the settlement. It is one of the busiest beaches on Kythnos and is neighbored by the picturesque beach of Antonia to its left and the small beach of Ammoudaki to its right, which is often used by fishing boats.

Families usually flock to Megali Ammos beach, which is known for its golden sand and tranquil, blue water. There are not many trees, and some are even situated right by the shoreline. Unfortunately, these trees cannot provide enough shade for all the swimmers. The Beach Bar on the beach also offers its services to visitors.

The area offers a variety of eateries where you can sample the Kythnian cuisine and savor freshly caught fish. You can also find cafes where you can start your day with a delicious breakfast or take a break and sip some coffee, eat pastries, or indulge in some ice cream after your swim. Additionally, various shops and bakeries are in the area if you need to pick up some necessities.

Behind the row of holiday homes, nestled at the back of the beach, is a valley formed by streams descending from the mountain slopes. This is where the locals cultivate orchards and vegetable patches, supplying them with their produce. At the western edge of the beach, on the low hill, there are a few secluded holiday dwellings.

The Kythnos peninsula of Kanala is home to a unique landscape. To the east of Ammoudaki beach stands the imposing rocky sea cliffs at the base of the peninsula. At the southern tip lies the chapel of Saint Calliope, providing a stunning view of the bay. On the right side of the bay, visitors can find a small pier and stairs that lead to a small pine forest. At the center of the settlement lies the church of Panagia Kanala, which serves as the protector of the island.
