Description
Loutra (Baths) beach, situated in the northeast region of Kythnos island, is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. It is part of the bay of the same name and features a marina and spas. The beach is spacious and is located in the middle of the bay, with the spa buildings designed by Ernst Ziller located right behind it. This spa was visited by King Otto and Queen Amalia. The hot mineral springs and their healing properties have been known since ancient times, thus the former name of Kythnos island was "Thermia".
Loutra Beach is a unique destination due to the presence of hot springs, which combine with the sea at the southern end of the beach. Here, a small pool has been formed by rocks that separate it from the ocean, and locals refer to it as Kakavou. The temperature of the water is always the same, around 52° Celsius, and does not change with the seasons. To the right of the beach, the tower of Mazarakis stands tall, a beautiful building constructed in a Western European style, adding a special charm to the area.
Loutra Beach is an expansive stretch of sand and small pebbles, with a few trees and umbrellas scattered here and there. Along the road, taverns and cafeterias have tables set up directly on the beach. Further along, the beach widens and is shaded by large trees and fixed umbrellas. This is where the island's diving center is located, providing an alternative activity for visitors. At the far right end of the beach is a pool that is fed by a hot spring.
The village of Loutra, situated in an amphitheatre-like formation, boasts stunning white-washed Cycladic houses and church spires and windmills that stand out amongst them. Accommodation options, such as rooms, studios and small hotels, are plentiful and many are within walking distance of the beach. Additionally, there is a bakery, supermarket and a variety of small shops in the vicinity.
One can not help but be enchanted by the picturesque Loutra and its beach. The harbor is a bustling scene with an abundance of boats, speedboats and sailboats moored in two or even three rows at both marinas. Looking out from the beach at the northern end of the bay, an old loading bay can be seen jutting out. This was used for the shipment of minerals in the past when the island was home to iron mines.
