The small village of Paleokastritsa, around 23 km northwest of Corfu Town, is renowned for its picturesque beauty. The village's name, which translates to 'old fortress', is a testament to the castle that used to stand on the rocky cave where the Monastery of the Virgin stands today.

Paleokastritsa is a popular destination, with many taverns overlooking the serene blue bay, and six beaches scattered around the area, surrounded by olive tree forests. This cosmopolitan resort stretches along the coastline, and is packed with hotels, restaurants and bars. Not to mention the Monastery of the Virgin, which dominates the village, and has an impressive collection of post-Byzantine icons, books, and other objects.

The main beach is small, but well known for its crystal clear waters, and offers great views of the sea. It is usually busy due to its many bars and taverns.
