Description
Recognizing the threat it posed, the Maniates besieged the castle the following year and requested assistance from the Venetians, who sent 24 ships. The Turks eventually surrendered, and the castle was destroyed.
In 1670, the Ottomans returned and repaired the castle, but they were driven out again by 1770 during the Orlov Revolt. The Greek naval hero Lambros Katsonis used the bay as a hideout but was forced to abandon it after a legendary battle against a Turkish-French fleet in 1792. During World War II, Porto Kagio served as an escape point for Allied soldiers fleeing to Egypt.
