Description
The Venetians took control of Niokastro in 1686 after it was constructed by the Turks in 1573. In 1715, it was once again under Turkish rule, together with the strongholds of Palionavarino and Koroni.
It was taken by the Greek warriors in 1821, during the early months of the Greek Revolution.
Ibrahim Pasha took it in 1825 and held it under his authority until the French general Maison freed it in 1828.
There are two primary portions to the castle:
1) Enceinte-Lower Castle; the bigger of the two portions occupies the slope of the hill and is composed of ashlar limestone stones.
2) Upper Castle: a hexagon-shaped stronghold guarding five of the wall's six corners with imposing battlements and protruding bastions.
