Description
Only faint, low-lying ruins are scattered around the hill and its perimeter, but thick vegetation makes detailed observation difficult.
This site was once the acropolis of one of the ancient demes of Attica, called Sfittos. The acropolis later developed into a settlement known as Filiati, which was abandoned in the 6th century AD during the reign of Emperor Justinian due to a plague epidemic. The fortification continued to be used until the Frankish period, between the 13th and 15th centuries.
Later, a post-Byzantine chapel dedicated to the Nativity of Christ was founded at the site. Over time, the chapel became a monastery, and the old acropolis of Sfittos became known as the "Castle of Christos."
