Description
The Grand Master of the Order of St. John Zacosta constructed it between 1460 and 1467.
The earthquake in 1481 and the Turkish siege in 1480 both caused significant damage to it.
The name comes from the fact that the castle was erected on the site of an ancient Byzantine chapel devoted to St. Nicholas.
A lighthouse has been erected at his place. There's been a lighthouse at the summit since the 17th century. Over the past fifteen years, the fort has undergone extensive repair.
