Akrotiri Venetian Castle of Santorini #1288

Description

It was donated by Nikolas Sanudos, Duke of Naxos, to the Gozadini family, who retained control of the goulas (tower) until 1617, even after the Turks had taken over the rest of the island. At the center of the settlement stands a goulas that remained in good condition until the 1956 earthquake. Another goulas is located at the Castelli of Akrotiri, slightly further from the settlement’s center.

Today, the tower is privately owned. Between 2012 and 2017, it housed an exhibition of musical instruments, which has since closed.
