Description
Alykes is situated 32 kilometers from Limenas, on the southeast side of Thassos. This peninsula is of archaeological importance, and the ancient marble quarry is located at its edge. Marble blocks are visible beneath the sea. Aliki has two bays.
It is believed that in ancient times it was the kingdom of Alice and had a large port as well as a large population. Two early Christian basilicas from the 5th century, which were reception areas for pilgrims, are situated at a higher point. Sailors who were there to transport marble left their names, as well as those of their family and their lovers, engraved on the steps of the buildings.
A sanctuary dedicated to Apollo was founded on the eastern coast in the 7th century BC. In 1896, a well-preserved Kouros was discovered during excavations and now it is in the Istanbul museum. However, Alykes was suddenly abandoned, probably due to a major earthquake.
