Description
While the 1st National Assembly of Greece, held between December 1821 and January 1822, took place in this village and declared Greek independence, the castle itself is not directly connected to that historic event.
The medieval settlement dates back to the Byzantine period. In 1205, the Venetians took control of the region and either built or reinforced the fortification walls around the settlement.
Today, the settlement remains inhabited, but only a few ruins of the fortification walls have survived. These remains can be found around the rock that once formed the "acropolis" of the old settlement.
At the top of the castle hill, a small and narrow area of about 2,000 square meters exists. There is little to see apart from scattered ruins and a renovated church, which is the only standing structure.
