Description
In 1332, Cretan rebels demolished the castle, but it was rebuilt by the Venetians in 1334. After the Ottoman conquest of Chania, eight years later, in 1653, the Turks besieged the Castle of Selinos by both land and sea. They eventually captured it, demolished the fortification again, and later rebuilt it.
Today, only ruins of the castle remain, most of which date from the period of Turkish rule. The fortress was almost square in shape, featuring two towers on the south side and one on the north. Like many forts, it contained cantonment areas, residences for officials, a church, and small water tanks. The remains of the two southern towers are still visible among the ruins.
