Description
It was one of three Byzantine-era castles that defended Corfu before the Venetian period (1386–1797), forming a defensive triangle: Gardiki protected the south, Kassiopi the northeast, and Angelokastro the northwest.
Situated on the northeastern coast, Kassiopi Castle had strategic importance as it overlooked the Corfu Channel, which separates the island from the mainland. Despite its advantageous position, the castle never played a major role in Corfu's history and was abandoned relatively early.
The castle's origins are uncertain, but it is generally believed to be Byzantine, likely constructed in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Maurice. In 1081, Count Bohemund of Taranto captured the castle at the start of the first Norman invasion of Greece.
