Description
Amorgos's capital city is Chora. It was established in the early Byzantine era and flourished following the eighth-century AD, when the island's inhabitants was forced to relocate due to Saracen assaults.
Chora has grown up around a tall, thin rock with the castle builed on top of it.
The fortress was erected around the beginning of the 13th century by the Venetian owners of the island.
Amorgos joined the other Cyclades in becoming a part of the Venetian Marco Sanudo's Duchy of Naxos. Sanudo gave the Ghizi brothers, Andrea and Geremiah, Amorgos as a fief. Not long after acquiring the island, the Ghizi constructed the fortress
