Description
The Knights of Saint John built this stronghold, which has Byzantine and Venetian architectural features. Originally, it was constructed on three levels, with a separate Grand Master in charge of each level.
Giorgio Orsini constructed the fortress in 1472 to defend the village's occupants against Ottoman fleet assaults. The settlement was known as Kastelli until the Dodecanese were set free. The name comes from the Latin word Castellum, which means castle.
