Description
It is notable for its well-preserved buildings, many of which remain in relatively good condition.
Located close to the modern village of Mylopotamos (Greek: Μυλοπόταμος, meaning "river with mills"), the settlement took its name from the presence of 22 watermills built along a small stream.
The castle was constructed by the Venetians in 1566, as indicated by an inscription above the gate. However, there was likely an earlier settlement on this site dating back to at least the 14th century. After the destruction of other parts of the island in 1537, this settlement gained importance and was rebuilt. Its position provides control over the west coast of Kythira and the Ionian Sea, but the fortification’s primary purpose was likely to protect the local population.
Within the castle, there are remains of nine churches from the 16th and 17th centuries.
