Castle of Orea #1104

Description

According to legend, the hill itself is artificial, created over many years as thousands of people supposedly brought soil to build it. The story also claims that two underground secret entrances were left leading into the castle.

This castle was one of two citadels in Oreos during the 4th century BC. It was later rebuilt during Venetian rule, and in 1275, it was captured by the knight Licario, who used it as a base for operations against the Franks.

Today, only a few remnants of the castle remain, as the site is largely neglected. Some sections of the fortification walls are still visible, with a maximum preserved height of about 2.5 meters.
