Description
Dating back to ancient times, the castle reached its peak during the period of the Despotate of Epirus in the 13th and early 14th centuries. Its name derives from the Greek word "arogi," meaning "help," as it served as a refuge for coastal populations during invasions by Slavs and Bulgars.
The strategic importance of the site lies in its location by the Louros River, which was navigable in ancient times. The castle was ideally positioned to control river traffic, and the surrounding area was a swamp until the 1950s, enhancing its natural defenses.
The castle’s walls have a perimeter of 1,000 meters, enclosing a total area of 32,000 square meters.
Recently, the castle has been restored and is now in much better condition than it was a few years ago. While not the most visually impressive castle in the region, it stands as the best-preserved Byzantine monument in Epirus.
