Description
Pera Kastro was constructed atop a spur, enclosing an area about 40 meters in length and 80 meters from northeast to southwest. The enceinte of the castle, which is made of chalk quarry stone and is shaped like a spur, is asymmetrical and lacks towers, but it has surrounding buildings that resemble towers, one of which guards the lower gate on the northwest side. On the northwest side, there are only very little remnants of a barbican that dates back to the most likely 15th century. The majority of the castle's current groundplans do not feature this barbican.
The preparation of the enceinte is good. There are still several escutcheons in the wall, although none that date later than 1479. These are the coats of arms of Grandmaster Jean Bonpart de Lastic of the Knights Hospitallers (ruled 1437-1454), Adimaro Dupuy (Governor 1464–1466), Jaume de la Geltrú (Governor 1466 and 1479), and Fantino Querini. The only difference between Grandmaster Antoine de Fluvian's (ruled 1421–1437) and De Lastic's coat of arms is their color scheme; Pera Kastro's escutcheon colors are absent.
The chapel (Panagia tis Chrysocherias) described earlier, together with another chapel and a cemetery, are all located inside the enceinte.
