Description
Only a few ruins remain of this castle, which was built on the site of the ancient city of Pindos, one of the cities in the region known as Doris. Doris was the first area where the Dorians settled after arriving in Greece.
The medieval castle was likely constructed around the mid-13th century by the Byzantines of the Despotate of Epirus. After 1274, it became part of the Frankish Duchy of Athens as part of the dowry for the brother of the Duke of Athens, William de La Roche, when he married Elena Angelina, the daughter of John I Doukas, Despot of Thessaly.
In 1311, when the Catalans took control of the Duchy of Athens, the castle became part of the Catalan dominion in Central Greece, remaining so until the arrival of the Turks in the region in 1392.
