Description
The Koulia is a fortified tower-house that allowed its owner to oversee the entire plain of Paramythia and the surrounding area.
History
The Koulia dates back to the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It belongs to the type of fortified, tower-like residence and features architectural and stylistic elements that link it to the fortified houses of Epirus and Albania during the Ottoman period. It is one of the best-preserved examples of fortified residences in northwestern Greece.
Tower-houses of this kind, built for defensive purposes, can be found from the Byzantine era until the 19th century across various regions of Greece, such as Thessaly and the Peloponnese, as well as in other parts of the Balkan Peninsula. Their fortified design was primarily dictated by defensive needs, providing safety to noblemen and landowners.
