Description
Resembling more of a tower-house than a traditional castle, it has a square layout covering an area of 400 square meters with a perimeter of 80 meters. The only entrance is located on the north side.
In 1914, the Italian medievalist G. Gerola discovered the arms of Grand Master Fabrizio del Carretto (1513-1521) and the emblem of the Order of St. John within the castle.
Primarily a control point, the castle was strategically placed within the line of sight of Phileremos Castle. It also served as a summer residence for the Grand Masters of the Order. The structure was repaired between 1510 and 1520, though it had existed at least since the 14th century. A 1479 document indicates that the inhabitants of Trianda and Kremasti were instructed to seek shelter in their respective castles when needed. Other records from the Hospitallers confirm that Kremasti functioned as a castellany.
