Description
One of the largest beaches of Syros, south of the island's capital, Ermoupolis, is – as the name suggests – Megas Gialos beach, in front of the homonymous settlement.
At a distance of 12 kilometers from Ermoupoli and then Azolimnos, Santorini, Fabrica, Katergaki, Vari and Achladi, the two sandy beaches of Megas Gialos beach as well as the scattered coves are an ideal choice especially during the melting season, as due to its position in the south of the island, it is naturally protected.
In addition to the umbrellas that exist along Megas Gialos beach, natural protection from the sun's rays is also offered by the sea urchins that reach almost to the edge of the sea.
If you still want to combine your bath with a short walk, then you can visit the church of Agios Antonios, which is located next to the beach of Megas Gialos and behind which begins a path that leads to the bay of Ampela and to a small and quiet sandy beach.
Due to the settlement of the same name that has hotels, rooms for rent, taverns and shops, Megas Gialos beach is another option as a base for accommodation in Syros.
In any case, access to Megas Gialos beach is ensured by the frequent KTEL routes in case someone does not have their own means of transport.
