Description
Little is known about the castle's history. The presence of lime mortar in the masonry suggests a construction date from the 3rd-4th century AD or later. However, the exact era of the surface pottery remains unclear.
In any case, it was a mountain castle situated in the hinterland of Serres, likely established in connection with the exploitation of the area's mineral wealth. Traces of metallurgical activity can still be seen along the hill’s western slope.
From a geostrategic perspective, the castle of Oreini seems to have controlled an ancient road linking Sirri (Serres) with the mountainous hinterland. This road is thought to have followed a route similar to the current Serres-Kato Vrontou-Kato Neurokopi road.
