Description
The monk Hosios Christodoulos, who had also established the monastery of St. John of Patmos, built the castle in the eleventh century.
The castle was occupied from the time of the Knights (1315–1522) and the Ottoman conquest until the 19th century, when a plague forced its abandonment (about 1830).
Three Baileys are present. The upper one encircles the hill's summit, the second one covers a larger region to the east, west, and south, and remnants of low walls to the north of the top bailey point to the existence of a third bailey. There are three locations where gates can be seen; the first Bailey has four towers, while the second Bailey has three. Pyli has seven towers left standing.
