Description
However, during the Ottoman period (Tourkokratia), the town gradually lost its importance, with commercial activity shifting to Marmario and military control relocating to the modern village of Orfanio, where a small fortress was established.
This small fortress, built to protect the delta, was likely constructed in the 18th century or possibly earlier. According to Tsouris (1999), it may have been built as early as the early 16th century, and by the 18th century, it was already reported as being in ruins.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The fortress was relatively small and rectangular in shape, covering an area of 5,500 square meters with a perimeter of nearly 300 meters.
The outline of the fortification remains visible. In some sections, particularly on the eastern and northern sides, the walls have deteriorated to very low or zero height. However, the walls on the western and southern sides are in relatively better condition, with some sections preserved at their original height. The masonry consists of medium-sized rough-hewn stones bound with lime mortar.
There are no visible traces of buildings within the fortress.
