Description
The tower, completed around 1699, has fortunately been well-preserved over the years. Today, it even functions as a holiday home. Its picturesque surroundings make it a highly photogenic spot, attracting numerous visitors annually.
Adjacent to the Palaiologos Tower is the Byzantine-era Orthodox church of Panagia Orfani. This is unsurprising, as many Venetian towers in Naxos were constructed inland, away from the sea, to enhance protection from pirates. These towers often included a small Catholic monastery inside or nearby, which were later converted into Orthodox churches.
Both landmarks can be found along a hiking trail that begins in Sangri and ends in Tsikalario.
