Description
The fortress was constructed by the Venetians in the thirteenth century to mark their arrival. When they were done, they established Chora, a little settlement.
A few village residents were chosen to oversee production and set taxes. Encircled by vast, arable plains, this community still standing.
The Venetians reared sheep and goats in addition to growing fruit and vegetables. They also liked to hunt in the plains. They extracted pumice, sulfur, alunite, mining salt, and salt from the surrounding salt marshes by excavating mines into the surrounding hills and mountains. They dispatched ships to trade with other people in a nearby harbor.
The Venetians constructed a wall and a garrison gate around the village because of its rapid growth. They constructed monasteries, churches, and a drainage system as well.
Customs taxes were abolished by the Venetians by the end of the thirteenth century. This enhanced the product supply and demand. The population increased as the island drew in more commerce ships. The village grew outside the newly constructed wall, took on the name Milos, and was designated as the island's new capital. Due to its growing popularity, pirates came here to sell their treasure, purchase food, make repairs, and spend the winter.
