Description
The tower belongs to the Xiropotamou Monastery and is known as the "Tower of Poulcheria" or the "Tower of the Countess," named after the Byzantine Empress Poulcheria (399-453), who, according to tradition, founded the Xiropotamou Monastery.
The exact date of the tower’s construction is unknown. Primarily, it served as an observatory and watchtower to protect the monastery.
A drawing by the Russian traveler Vassily Brasky in 1744 depicts the tower in good condition.
Its dimensions are 7.2 by 6.8 meters.
