Description
The castle was of great strategic importance for the Franks, as it was located at a critical point, protecting the area from enemy raids. In addition, it served as a defense against the revolts of the local Greeks and Slavs, who were resisting Frankish rule. The castle belonged to one of the 22 feudal areas of the Barony of the Franks, under the leadership of the French nobleman Hugo Devryger.
Today, although the castle is not preserved intact, it can be visited and is an important monument, recalling the military and political history of Stemnitsa, mainly during the Middle Ages.
