Description
The tower stands on a low hill overlooking the north bank of the Ezovitis River. On the same hill, just below the tower, there is a chapel carved into the rock, dedicated to Agia Marina. This chapel is mentioned in an 11th-century document (under the name "Theotokos tou Spilaiou," meaning "Virgin of the Cave") as a dependency of the Iviron Monastery of Mount Athos. At that time, the nearby settlement was known as Agios Stefanos.
The tower itself is believed to date back to the first half of the 14th century.
