Description
This tower is not recorded in Byzantine or other historical sources. However, we know that in 1299, Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos granted a settlement (proastion) in this area to the Monastery of Chilandar on Mount Athos.
It is likely that this tower served a monastic purpose, similar to the towers found in Chalkidiki, built to protect and support the various dependencies of the Mount Athos monasteries. Based on construction style and limited historical information, the tower is estimated to date back to the mid-14th century.
The structure has a nearly square layout with internal dimensions of 6.5m x 7.0m and walls 2 meters thick. Its maximum preserved height is around 7 meters.
