Description
From 1207, when Marco Sanudo established the Duchy of Naxos, until 1537, when the Ottoman pirate Hayredin Barbarossa pillaged the island, Paros was under Venetian rule.
At the end of the 13th or the start of the 14th century, the Venetians first constructed a stronghold in Naoussa.
The Sommaripa family, who ruled the island in the fifteenth century, refurbished the fortress near the port of Naoussa in order to keep the pirates away. About 1500, the distinctive circular tower with fire apertures was erected at the harbor's entrance.
