Description

The site originally housed an ancient acropolis dating back to the 5th century BC. In the 6th century AD, the Byzantines replaced the acropolis with a fortress.

In 1373, the Genoese leader Francis I ordered the reconstruction of the castle after it had been destroyed when the Genoese captured it in the 13th century.

The Ottomans, who seized the island in 1462, made additional repairs and alterations to the castle in the subsequent centuries.
