Description
Evidence within the castle walls suggests that a fortification existed at this location well before the Byzantine era. The castle, in its current form, was originally built during the reign of Emperor Justinian.
In 751, the walls were further reinforced under Emperor Constantine V. A final major reconstruction occurred in 1303.
